Drones - Safety - Geo Fencing
Geofencing
Geofencing technology has been around for a while. DJI first introduced its system in 2015 and several drone manufacturers have similar software in place. Effectively, geofencing tech creates virtual, location-based barriers that prevent drone flights and take-offs in sensitive areas: usually around airports and one-off locations where crowds will be present, like festivals and sporting events.
So how does this work and what does it do?
The first thing a safe drone pilot called a PIC, (Pilot in Control) does is to check the area for safe flying. Some ways available are the FAA app called B4UFLY, or apps like Airmap or Verifly. These apps have internal mapping that will pinpoint your location and actually give you a notice such as a warning action item if there are restrictions that exist. In some cases the “Geo Fence” will even prevent the drone from starting up. An example would be if you are within a “0” altitude area close to an airport or a restricted “no fly” zone.
